Corn Harvest ~ Room 112 & Room 114

written by Kaden, Julie & Christian

Last Friday, Room 112 had a corn harvest.  The corn was from our gardens.  Mrs. Mager's class from last year planted the corn.  We invited Room 114 to join us for the celebration!

The corn was all different sizes.  It was soft, buttery and yummy!  We also made orange jello.  We talked about solids, liquids and gases when we made the jello.  The jello had whipped cream on it!  Yum!
We had one lost tooth during the harvest.  Christian lost his tooth and couldn't find it!!!  But it's okay!
Room 114 painted some decorations for the feast!  Room 112 used the corn husks and added decorations.

It was fun to share the corn together!

Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up

written by Jillian & Olivia J.

On Thursday, September 25th, we did our shoreline clean-up.  We got a glove and walked to the high school.  We walked along the train tracks.  We found lots of garbage.  We found paper, cigarette butts, wrappers & glass and plastic bottles.  There were plastic bags in the ditch ~ lots of them!  It is so important to do the community clean up because it is ugly to look at all of the garbage, it creates gases that go into the air and the garbage is very bad for the environment!

Last week, we had a shoreline clean-up.  We went to the beach and back with the grade 10s.  We found probably 100 cigarette butts!  The shoreline clean up helps our environment and makes our air cleaner.  It also saves the Earth!  The shoreline clean up makes a change in the community.  We picked up so much garbage, it was almost scary!  As tiring as it was, I'm so glad that we did the clean-up!

Shoreline clean up is a time to walk around our town to find garbage.  The shoreline clean up is an important time to pick up garbage.  I like to help and pick up the garbage.

Last week, we did a shoreline clean up.  There was more garbage than I thought.  The reason it is important is because we want to keep our environment healthy.  We went with the high schoolers.  There a lot of cigarette butts.  We each got one glove to pick up the garbage.  The most garbage was in the ditches.  All of the grade 3&4s went!

Thank you to Gimli High School for always inviting us to be part of this very important initiative!

The love of knitting

written by Room 113

During Explorations, we have discovered a love of knitting.  We have explored finger knitting, straw weaving and needle knitting.  We read a book called "Extra Yarn" by Mac Barnett.  It is illustrated by Jon Klassen....he also illustrated the book "I Want my Hat Back."  We love that book!
Two weeks ago, Catherine visited our classroom to teach us about spinning sheep's wool.  She used her foot to spin the wheel.  She used a niddy noddy to make a skane of wool.  We had never seen a niddy noddy before.  We got to keep the skanes of wool.  One is turquoise and one is turquoise and white.  She showed us different kinds of wool...some of it was raw and some of it was clean.  She talked to us about knitting and told us that if we could knit, we could learn to cast on....that's the next thing we're going to work on.  Knitting is calming, relaxing and makes you feel happy.
Catherine is coming back to visit us soon.  She is going to show us how to make natural colour dyes!  We can't wait for her to come back!!!
