Fresh from our Garden ~ Mrs. Johannesson's class

The children in Room 115 have been very busy!!!  After we picked our carrots from the garden, we created a survey to graph what we wanted to do with the produce.  It was a tie!  We decided to try carrots & dip and to make carrot muffins!  Many families shared their favorite carrot cake/muffin recipe with us.  We loved grocery shopping, preparing the carrots, making the muffins and sharing them with our friends in Room 116.
Thank you to everyone who shared recipes with us!

Our Potato Project 2014

This spring, the grade 2s & 3s planted potatoes with Mrs. Chapnick in our garden beds.  Now in grade 3 & 4, the children helped Mrs. Chapnick dig and harvest the potatoes.  We celebrated with Hot Potato Day on Friday, October 9th.  Each child in the school washed potato and wrapped a potato for baking.  Our chefs, Mr. Kustiak and Mr. Ostapchuk baked the potatoes and prepared the sour cream, onions and cheese for us with Mrs. Chapnick.  Right before lunch, the potatoes arrived ready to enjoy.  They were delicious!  We harvested almost 200 potatoes this fall.  After our hot potato feast, we had leftover potatoes.  These potatoes are being donated to Evergreen Basic Needs for families in our community to enjoy!
A special thank you to Mrs. Chapnick, Mr. Ostapchuk and Mr. Kustiak for making Hot Potato Day such a success!

From Seed to Salsa

We have been on a Tomato Journey over the past few months in Room 132!  We planted our seeds and plants in June and harvested them in September.  We decided to make salsa with our tomato harvest and last week we celebrated with chips and our homemade salsa!  What an amazing journey this has been!

Bag it Up Challenge at SSES

We were counting up bags this week!  Putting the bags into groups of ten became the best solution to counting over 300 bags!  Great problem solving, girls!
Thank you to all of our families who have sent in bags for our Bag it Up Challenge.  We will continue to collect bags until the end of October.

Creating with Nature in Kindergarten!

In Kindergarten we have been talking about beautiful things in nature.  The students brought in their own bag of beautiful things in nature.  We read the book Leaf Man by Lois Elhert and discussed how she used leaves to create pictures that tell a story.  We then made our own creations using leaves, pine cones, seeds, acorns, rocks, grass and branches that tell our story.
